Welcome Back to Middle Earth in LOTR Trick-Taking Game

Welcome Back to Middle Earth in LOTR Trick-Taking Game

2025 was a great year to be a Tolkien fan. We really were spoilt for choice with games set in the beloved world of Middle Earth. One of the most popular games at Chaos Cards central was The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking Game. We really felt that the game captured the spirit of the journey so well and we were eager to see how the adventure continued. The Allies expansion introduced more iconic characters such as Elrond, Faramir and Grima Wormtongue.

As we look forward to the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring, we can also look forward to the next stand alone instalment of the fantastic trick taking series from Office Dog: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Trick-Taking Game.

Forming the Fellowship

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking Game is a thematic, co-operative game for between 1 and 4 players and was really well received upon its release. (Needless to say, we loved it at Chaos Cards central.) The fast paced strategic game really stood out from other releases. Each player has a Lord of the Rings character with a unique objective, players must collaborate to complete all objectives within the campaign before the game ends. Something that makes the trick-taking game even more interesting is that players cannot discuss the cards within their hand: we found this very hard to do whilst playing a game based on such an iconic and loved theme! The campaign consists of 18 chapters, with multiple games within each chapter. We really enjoyed playing the game and the Allies expansion.

The Two Towers

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Trick-Taking Game isn't simply an expansion, it acts as a standalone game as well, and it really evolves the mechanics we enjoyed in the first game. Just like The Fellowship of the Ring, the beautifully imagined stained glass artwork help to make this card game stand out from others.

The Two Towers consists of 17 narratively driven chapters where you can play as the heroes and the villains. The second installment of the saga maintains the co-operative heart of the original, but introduces new items and character conditions that need to be met in order to advance the story.

Let’s take a look at what is new in The Two Towers Trick-Taking Game.

  • Expanded Modes: From solo mode, to 2 player or the ‘The Road Goes Ever on’ mode, The Two Towers has more ways to play then before.
  • Charming Narrative: One of our favourite aspects of the first game was the fact that the story cards featured some original Tolkien text. We are excited to see this continue in The Two Towers as we feel it keeps the game as close to the source material as possible.
  • Challenging: While the game remains easy to learn, it does ramp up the difficulty. The Two Towers requires players to have even tighter cooperation and even sharper trick taking skills in order to navigate the path of the Three Hunters and the Ring Bearer.

The Road Goes Ever On and On

The combination of the iconic stained glass art and the “just one more chapter” gameplay means that The Two Towers Trick-Taking Game is a must have for any fan of Tolkiens fairy tales. It is quite hard to find a medium that can capture the epic nature of Middle Earth in a short space of time, but we really think that this trick taking game makes a grand effort at it.

For those who fell in love with the first game, the narrative nature and increased difficulty ensure that The Two Towers is the perfect, and logical next step for your collection. The new game successfully blends nostalgia with fresh mechanics, and provides us with an exciting new way for fans both old and new to explore Middle-earth. We think this fresh take on the saga is the perfect way for fans of all generations to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring. Why not check out our post on recent Tolkien releases if you are looking for more games to play with your fellowship.

What do you think? Will you be playing The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Trick-Taking Game when it is released? Let us know your thoughts about this game (or The Fellowship of the Ring!) over on our socials. We love to talk about all things Middle Earth.
