Our Ultimate Guide to the Lord of the Rings releases this year

It's no secret that the Chaos Cards team consists of many Lord of the Rings fans. So, you can imagine our excitement when we found out that 2025 is shaping up to be an EXTRAORDINARY year for Tolkien-inspired game releases! Whether you're a board game newbie, a seasoned player, a miniature painter, or even a Lego Master Builder, there's a whole treasure trove of new ways to dive into Middle-earth and experience the epic tale of friendship and courage. In this post, we round up some of the releases we are most excited about. So get ready to explore Middle Earth!

Form your Fellowship

Fate of the Fellowship[1]

With The Lord of the Rings: the Fate of the Fellowship, The fate of Middle Earth is in your hands. The highly anticipated release is from the creators of one of our all-time favourite games; Pandemic; by Matt Leacock, add in Lord of the Rings as the theme and we are pretty sure this game is set to be a hit this year. Fate of the Fellowship is the perfect combination of cooperative and narrative gameplay that fully immerses you within the magical realms of Middle Earth. Although the Fate of the Fellowship is a strategic and at times complex game, the mechanics will be familiar to anyone who has played Pandemic. The aim of the game is to protect Frodo from the menacing Nazgul and Saurons ever watchful eye. Each character has unique abilities to help aid the quest and battle common enemies. The game is perfect for between 1 and 5 players, who must cooperatively trek across a perilous Middle Earth as 2 characters with a mutual mission. The dice tower and the artwork look INCREDIBLE! We definitely cannot wait to play. The teams at Pandemic and developer Matt Leacock have thoroughly spoilt us with this amazing game.

The Hour has Come

Duel for middle earth[1]

If you are after an engaging and fun game for 2 players set in Middle Earth, then we think that Lord of the Rings Duel could be perfect for you. Based on 7 Wonders Duel, a popular two-player version of 7 Wonders, the mechanics of the new Lord of the Rings Duel should be familiar to those playing the original duel version of the game. Players can either side with the Fellowship or the dark forces of Middle Earth. There is a small board representing the much loved worlds of Tolkien and you can really feel how heavily this game is inspired by the fantasy writer. Seven interlinked spaces represent lands from Rohan to Mordor. The Fellowship wins if the ring is destroyed, whereas Sauran wins if the Nazgul catches up with the ring bearer. The rulebook is precise and easy to follow and the artwork is really beautiful and in keeping with the themes of Lord of the Rings. Even the tile illustrations deserve a shout-out for being of a high standard!

Trick your way across Middle Earth

Fellowship of the ring trick taking game

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Tricktaking Game is a thematic cooperative card game and is perfect for between 1 and 4 players and lasts about 20 minutes. Each player has a Lord of the Rings character with a unique objective, players must collaborate to complete all objectives within the campaign before the game ends. Something that makes the trick-taking game even more interesting is that players cannot discuss cards within their hand, this is something very hard to do when you are playing a game based on such an iconic and much-loved subject matter! The campaign consists of 18 chapters, with multiple games within each chapter. As with Lord of the Rings Duel, the artwork is really beautiful and sticks closely to its subject matter. The cards have a stained glass window style which fits in really well with the game and looks pretty stunning whilst playing. The solo mode of the game is just as satisfying as the multiplayer version, and both formats are very simple to learn. Early reviews have noted its similarity to the mechanics of The Crew series of games from Kosmos and we think the comparisons are well earned.

Ride of the Rohirrim : Battlegames in Middle-Earth

MESBG[1]

For the fans of miniature painting, the latest Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game is a great option for you. The latest wave of Games Workshop miniatures are based on the breathtaking anime movie of ‘The War of the Rohirrim’ released last year, and these new stylised pieces fit perfectly into previous editions of the MESBG game. Despite being new sculpts, the miniatures are in keeping with the style of older editions of the game from 2002.The War of the Rohirrim is set approximately 183 years before Bilbo ‘discovers’ the ring, but the ethereal feel of the film and the Games Workshop tie in look and feel as timeless as the beloved saga did on the big screen. We have to say that the miniatures for the War of the Rohirrim, Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game, are absolutely stunning. The Miniatures can be used throughout any time period in Middle Earth, with the Hill Tribesmen being a perfect army for Saruman. As the battle is human versus human, there is no fantastical monsters or magical beings that we have become used to in Tolkiens tales, however, this doesn’t detract from the gameplay at all. Luckily the rules haven't changed much from the original format released alongside The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001.The release is great for newcomers to Miniature painting as well as stalwart fans of the genre, and all the sets are perfect for any fans of the horse lords of Middle Earth.

Tales of the Shire

10367 Box6 v29
Lego is set to return us to Middle Earth with an upcoming Lego set this Spring. The guys in the Chaos Cards office quite often reminisce about the Lord of the Rings Lego sets of old. They were legendary, amazing and the hard-core Tolkien fans were pretty sad when they were discontinued. We have recently been treated to Lego Barad-Dur and Lego Rivendell, but you can imagine the hype in the office when Lego Icons announced a surprise addition to these releases at the beginning of the month. Get ready to welcome the Lego Icons: The Lord of the Rings Book nook (10367) to your collection. The Book Nook looks INCREDIBLE and we can’t wait to get building it! Coming in at 1201 pieces, the Lego set includes everything you need to build the Balrog; including the Bridge of Khazad Dum, the Balrog, his fiery whip, and the Gandalf the Grey Minifigure, (complete with staff and Glamdring.) The Book Nook can either be displayed opened out on a bookshelf; showcasing the iconic scene from the Mines of Moria, or subtlety slotted in between your favourite copies of The Lord of the Rings. It is really a great Lego set for fans of the epic saga, and complements any Tolkien book collection! We defintely had a great time building it.
