Celebrate 250 Years of Regency Wit with Board Games

Dearest readers, prepare your dance cards. With the 250th celebration of Jane Austen’s birth in 2025 and the long-awaited return of Bridgerton in January 2026, the Regency era really is having a major moment. The Chaos Cards team thought what better way to celebrate these period dramas than by escaping the mundane everyday life and bringing the excitement of the grand ball to the comfort of your own home (with some board games of course!)

We may not actually be able to travel back to the historic streets of Bath and London in the Regency era, but we CAN recommend some immersive games and even a puzzle to help give us a sense of her life, wit and romantic world. So grab your tea, practise your wit and get dressed up in your Regency finery and prepare to have some Jane Austen related fun!

Courtship and Fun with The Jane Austen Game

First up we have The Jane Austen Game, an immersive board game where players can step into the elegant Regency era.

Jane Austen’s portrayal of everyday life during her lifetime is often celebrated and this game is perfect for fans of both her novels and on screen adaptions. Players dance from ball to ball, with the goal of collecting admirers. Write your own story as you build a dream deck of friends and suitors with highly detailed game elements which entertain and delight at every turn.

Will you stay single and become a woman with an independent mind, much like Jane herself? Or will you marry a dashing suitor with a nice fortune? Play The Jane Austen Game to find out.

Tour Regency England with The Jane Austen Puzzle

If you are more of an introvert and prefer the quiet to the noise of a busy ballroom, The World of Jane Austen Puzzle sounds like it could be perfect for you. (Check out our recent post on our favourite Puzzles lately over here.)

Much of Jane Austen's life was spent in the historic and beautiful Hampshire, and its people and society provided a lot of inspiration for her novels. The beautiful artwork featured on this puzzle, lets you take a scenic tour of her Regency world: from the rolling hills of Derbyshire (Pemberley), via Hampshire and Lyme Regis, to the golden stone of the Bath Skyline.

Not only do you get a stunning puzzle, but the box features a rather nice-looking poster filled with Jane Austen facts. The puzzle itself features an array of her contemporaries and famous characters hidden amongst the landscape. Can you spot Mr. Darcy at home in Pemberley? Or perhaps Mr. Knightley strolling around his garden?

A Bridgerton Connection: Love Letters and High Society

The Bridgerton book series and subsequent Netflix series are heavily influenced by the social rules, balls, and romantic pursuits famously captured in Jane Austen's works. For fans of this modern Regency drama, we have two themed games that are sure to be loved by Austen enthusiasts and Bridgerton fans alike.

Jane Austen is known to have been a prolific letter writer, and it seems she was as humorous and witty in her letters as she was in her novels. Sadly, not many of her original letters exist now, but another way to experience the tradition of love letters in the Regency era is to play Love Letter: Bridgerton.

The mechanics are the same as the original Love Letter card game: players must eliminate the others or have the highest value card in hand when the deck is empty. Players win by having the most diamonds at the end of the game and, crucially, figuring out who Lady Whistledown is. Many of the characters from the beloved series are included, even Queen Charlotte, who has the power to eliminate multiple players in one go! This is one game Regency fans will not want to miss.

In Bridgerton, where balls and social events are the place to pursue courtship, just in Jane Austen’s novels, why not try a game in a similar style to The Jane Austen Game?

In Bridgerton: The High Society Game, players must attend balls and try to attract suitors. All this is done with the end goal of gaining a marriage proposal. It is best to choose your suitor based on their prestige, and desirability. Each player has prospects which can earn prestige points, whilst trait cards can help you in terms of desirability. The game is played out over 8 balls, and points are earned during these events as well as from making a love match. The winner is the player with a love match and the highest number of points. The engaging gameplay makes this pursuit of romance rather enjoyable.

The Literacy Legacy of Jane Austen

Jane Austen’s enduring popularity 250 years after her birth is sure to be a testament of her acute observations of society, manners and matters of the human heart. Her witty prose and relatable characters; from Elizabeth Bennet to Captain Wentworth, continue to charm readers all over the world. Her influence on writing is undeniable, as reflected in Bridgertons modern day take on the Regency period.

So, whether you're spending your afternoon peacefully piecing together a scene from Derbyshire or competing for the most eligible suitor at a grand ball, these games and puzzles offer a delightful way to immerse yourself in the world she so eloquently described. Grab a cup of tea, put on your finest attire, and celebrate the legacy of Jane Austen, the undisputed queen of the Regency romance.
