The Story Behind the Morphy Board.
by the designer, Matthew Cussens.

Perhaps you might have noticed how often even good adult chess players do not actually know many chess openings or defences – they play a few and nothing else! I myself did not care to wade through the ideas presented as only data, data, data in just black and white; what I call the ‘telephone directory’ approach. Because chess was already a global game hundreds of years ago it was never marketed with any customer in mind. I felt there had to be an easier and more interesting way to present the ideas of the game, not only for the young newcomer to the game, but to allow chess players to go further with their chess, and so enjoy the game for longer, instead of hitting a wall of grey data and stopping there. I felt the game needed a marketing makeover!

At Folkestone Junior Chess Club, I wanted the children to find an effortless way to acquire small breadcrumbs of knowledge and for it to be organised and not left to them to work it out!
The Folkestone System and the Morphy Board will be to chess what the Periodic Table is to science.

The Folkestone System uses shape, size, colour, imagery, design, patterns, organisation and fonts to bring the major openings and defences of chess to life with a memorable organisational tool so these can be acquired effortlessly and move a young player’s knowledge of the game forward. The perfect foundation or stepping stone for all chess players.

Designed at Folkestone Junior Chess Club, the Morphy Board includes over 50 of the major chess openings and defences. Ideal for the chess trainer or young enthusiast. The Morphy Board takes an obstacle often overlooked by young players and turns it into a source of inspiration and learning. An important tool for the entire game of chess it will open up the ideas of chess to a greater depth for the next generation. Now every chess player can clear this hurdle without breaking stride.

The name Morphy Board is a nod to Paul Morphy, the great nineteenth century American chess genius, but is also derived by the concept behind it where morphology is the study of structure and shape and hence the company name; Morphylogical Ltd.
