Product Details

SEAL Team Flix is a fully co-operative or solo tactical dexterity game that pits 1-4 players against the forces of terrorism. Taking inspiration from several military-themed first-person shooter video games, SEAL Team Flix incorporates flicking, dice rolling, and character standees into an exciting, unique combination that will have the whole table standing up.

The game has two modes: campaign and skirmish. In campaign mode, players embark on an eight-mission non-linear adventure. Individual SEALs will get promoted several times over the course of the campaign...if they live. In skirmish mode, simply play one of the 17 missions as a standalone set-piece.

SEAL Team Flix is an objective-based game, with primary and secondary objectives which need to be resolved to successfully complete each mission. For example, in some missions, you must locate and acquire intelligence against the terrorist organization Gaia's Hope. In others, you must disarm time bombs or rescue hostages. While you are given intelligence at the beginning of each mission as to the number and nature of the objectives that need to be completed, every game will be different because you will never know where on the map they are until you physically locate them with your SEALs. The game's difficulty scales both with the number of SEALs playing as well as with three optional difficulty levels.

Admittedly, this is very much a first impression, but SEAL Team Flix is a fun game. I've only played a couple of missions at Rookie level, but there's a good mix of decision making - right from equipping your team and deciding tactics (all guns blazing or stealth?) - and dexterity involved. There seems to be a high degree of replayability in both the single play missions and the campaign. There are three basic levels of play - which affects mission goals and the number of opponents, and your team can develop specialisms as they progress, giving access to more advanced skills and technology (such as active camouflage suits and smart ammunition). The campaign system is non-linear, such that a failure on one mission doesn't automatically end the operation, but you may find yourself in a messy clean-up operation before you progress. There's a fair amount of preparation involved before the first play. Expect to spend a couple (or more) hours assembling the play boards - it's not that difficult if you take your time and follow the well illustrated instructions. DON'T rush in to punching out all the components without reading through the manual. Most of the parts fit well, but some of the smaller walls are a bit loose and there was one which needed "surgery" to make it fit properly. If in doubt, take a look at the game entry on BoardGameGeek (I'd like to post a link but Trustpilot apparently doesn't allow it) to see how others have worked through the issues. Also, once assembled and packed in the box, you won't get the lid to close fully - it's a known issue. The game may not be to everyone's taste but if you want a break from video games but want a first-person shooter vibe then this might be the game to scratch that itch. Final warning - it's a very heavy (physically, not gameplay wise) game. Don't drop it on your foot like I did!
