I had my eye on this game since October 2018. Its funny how your children can make you consider mad purchases like this one. I was watching the advertising online and reading reviews plus looking at endless images when I find my son standing oh so silently behind me. He had been there for a while. Cue the words... "Are you getting that dad?" which were said with a whisper. Cue being at Spring Comic-Con and finding it at a stall for £65. It was the first time I saw this in person but the price was alarming even though I knew it was retailing for as much when it hit general sale online. So I did my first search for the game in quite some time on Chaos Cards and at under £50 it was a no brainer. I have been looking for games to play with my son and this was the one which was really going to do that. Now the game... It is quite something. It harks back to the insane kids games of the 80's and 90's with plenty to do and speaking of the nostalgia for that sort of thing, the packaging brings back those memories with pretty much none of the compartmentalization which we see in modern board games. This is understandable given the board is vacuum formed into three sections which come together. As for gameplay, I do not know how the original played, but this feels familiar to how a fair few games are done now, moving with the use of cards instead of dice and having more than one card to choose from. Its a thinly veiled bit of strategy which would satisfy any experienced gaming parent looking to get their 7+ kid to level up so to speak. Movement cards come with consequences or small ways to help you on your journey across the island. As for the island, there is plenty to do. Snapshots to collect, treasures to pick up and the heart of Vul-Kar to battle for will keep you occupied, but watch out for those cataclysms! Fireballs and embers in the form of marbles either sit on rocks of the island or are waiting to be dropped from the pending inferno at the top of the island. Should you choose to trigger any of these, you are certain to see players take a tumble and its fun inflicting misfortune on your rivals at the table. The only concern I have with the gameplay itself is really to do with player placement. Because the island is vacuum formed and yes it is indeed impressive, its a fiddle to move around due to the size. Also when players get tumbled by embers and fire balls, there are various conditions on how to put your player piece back at the start of the turn. Its not difficult, its just something to wrap your head round and a task to explain to your child. Due to the size of the board affecting movement, play this on a lower table which you can reach around the board with. So the quality is great, but value for money? It is, if you have an eye fixed on getting the expansions. I do, but the cost will be an issue for me. Additions come via a pirate ship with cannon balls everywhere (more marbles), an Indiana Jones type expansion with a golden idol and snakes (green marbles), with a "crouching tiger/hidden bees (yellow marbles)" expansion that adds a springy based piece similar to what you find in a crimbo cracker, that you launch across the table to knock things over. I feel if you do add all those to the base game, there is so much chaos in play to leave you and your family and friends in stitches. It would be a riot with so much to keep you focused. But the base game, as excellent as it is, will only go so far on its own for older players. I love the game, its just the pricing.
