Carbon Neutral Company

The steps Chaos Cards have taken to help improve the environment.

What is carbon neutrality?

Carbon neutrality means that the carbon footprint of a company, product, service or event has been calculated on the basis of internationally recognised standards and balanced by supporting verified climate projects.

Chaos Cards is working with Climate Partner to contribute to reducing residual greenhouse gas emissions (CO2). All emissions are referred to as CO2 emissions and measured in tonnes of CO2. By this, we mean CO2 equivalents, for example all relevant greenhouse gases.

What is a Verified climate project?

Verified climate projects make an important contribution to fighting global warming, promote sustainable development in the countries where the projects take place, including improving clean drinking water supplies, expanding local infrastructures, creating sustainable jobs, and protecting biodiversity.

Calculating our carbon footprint

To make sure we are accounting for all of the carbon emissions across the business we gather information from a variety of sources. These fall into three scopes as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Scope 1

This considers all of the direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources that are owned or controlled by Chaos Cards including boilers, furnaces and vehicles.

Scope 2

The second scope accounts for emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by Chaos Cards.

Scope 3

Often the largest scope as it covers emissions that are created because of the activities of the company but not created by equipment owned by the company as that is covered by Scope 1. This includes everything from the products we sell, how those items are delivered to us, how those items are delivered to you, business travel by the Chaos Cards team and how the Chaos Cards staff travel to the office, shop or warehouse.

April 2024 to April 2025

Supported project: Afforestation, Dingxi, China

Amount of CO2 offset in kg: 190,820 (11 December 2025)

Afforestation, Dingxi, China

Near the Chinese city of Dingxi, this project increases forested areas on former barren land, including degraded farmland. Afforestation, reforestation and revegetation measures on an area of 49,060 hectares create a healthy habitat for native plant and animal species. This saves about 45,600,530 tonnes of CO2 during the project period.

As the area is severely affected by droughts, an irrigation system for the seedlings is essential. Therefore, water basins for rainwater as well as water from nearby rivers were constructed. The major benefit? The irrigation system has no negative impact on local water resources and residents are allowed to use the water to irrigate their own lands. The project has been very well received by the local population due to various positive aspects, including the improvement of a road, which eases the daily life of many people.

Changes we are making

  • Use only recycled cardboard and paper for our parcels.

  • Change to green energy suppliers.

Changes we have already made

  • Reduce all single use plastic in our dispatch process.

  • Promote recycling best practice at all of our sites.

  • Promote remote working.

  • Stopping use of air-freight services for any European shipments and using the option to offset carbon footprint with the courier any deliveries which do have to use air-freight.

April 2023 to April 2024

Supported project: Hydropower, Virunga Democratic Republic of Congo

Amount of CO2 offset in kg: 178,600 (31 October 2024)

Hydropower, Virunga,

Democratic Republic of Congo

This project is a run-of-river, greenfield, 13.26 MW hydroelectric plant at Matebe, in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The project site is located near the Virunga National
Park, approximately 80km north of the main city of Goma. The project contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among other things by providing access to clean energy and by creating jobs

  • A 13.26 MW hydroelectric plant
  • The hydroelectric plant has created jobs and provides training.
  • Provided public lighting by electrifying areas where there was previously no electricity.
  • Exporting renewable energy to the fossil fuel intensive national grid of the
DRC, the project is set to avoid 464,142 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the ten year crediting period.
  • The project helps preserve the biodiversity and landscape of Virunga National Park.

    April 2022 to March 2023

Supported project: Renewable energy, Asia, continent-wide

Amount of CO2 offset in kg: 235,000 (9 Februrary 2024)

Offset Project Expansion of renewable energy generation

    Asia, Continent-wide

Interest and demand for renewable energies are growing on the Asian continent as well. Climate projects generate necessary resources to drive the expansion of sustainable technologies. This renewable energy portfolio supports projects in several countries across Asia. It consists of the following climate projects, certified by the Gold Standard or the Verified Carbon Standard:

    • wind energy projects in India, China, Indonesia and Turkey
    • solar energy projects in India and China
    • hydropower projects in Turkey and Sri Lanka
    • biogas- and biomass projects in India, China and Thailand

    April 2021 to March 2022

Supported project: Wind energy, Tuppadahalli, India

Amount of CO2 offset in kg: 257,000 (6 April 2023)

    Offset Project Wind energy

    Tuppadahalli, India

Several small wind farms in the districts of Shimoga and Chitradurga generate clean electricity with a total of 34 turbines and a total capacity of 56 MW, which is fed into the Indian grid.

In addition to improved electricity supply, the project also facilitates the SWABALAMABAN programme, which provides vocational training for unemployed youth from local villages, such as electrical wiring, tailoring, agricultural activities or driving lessons. With education programmes as well as the establishing job opportunities for the local population the project supports the sustainable development of the region.

Estimate annual emission reductions: 128,809t CO2

    April 2020 to March 2021

Supported project: Wind energy, Northeast Brazil

Amount of CO2 offset in kg: 335,000 (14 April 2022)

    Offset Project Wind energy

    Northeast, Brazil

14 wind parks that boost sustainable development in the northeast of Brazil.

Estimate annual emission reductions: 652,150t CO2
