World Book Day: Best Board Games for Book Lovers

On World Book Day we celebrate the magic of storytelling, and at Chaos Cards many of us enjoy a good book as much as a board game! From lifelong bibliophiles to the more casual reader, there is a unique joy in seeing our favourite literary worlds come to life through dice, cards, and puzzles.

The Chaos Cards team have carefully curated a "reading list" of games and puzzles that capture the wit, mystery, and wonder of some of our favourite authors. So, grab a bookmark and get ready to discover a world of literary related games!

A Librarians Dream: A Place for All My Books

Best for: Fans of organisation, cosy aesthetics, and strategic planning.

Book lovers tend to fall into two camps; the extremely organised and aesthetically pleasing book lover, and then the chaotic good book lover -with books covering each and every surface. Before we set sail to Middle Earth or navigate Regency England, it would probably be a good idea to bring some kind of order to the literary chaos of our own book shelves. This is where A Place for All My Books comes in! This charming and satisfying puzzle game is designed for between 1-4 players who like a bit of organisation in their board games. Players will arrange shelves and balance themes to find the perfect spot for every title. With a dedicated solo mode, it’s the ultimate "quiet night in" for thinkers and book lovers alike.

Tolkien on the Tabletop

Best for: Fans of High Fantasy and sprawling games.

World Book Day in the Chaos Cards world wouldn’t be complete without some games set in Middle Earth. We have been spoilt lately with games set in the worlds of J.R.R Tolkien, but we thought the following would be a good choice for World Book Day:

  • The Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking Game: A fast-paced, cooperative campaign where you must complete unique character objectives. The catch? You cannot discuss your hand with your allies. It’s a silent, strategic battle against the Shadow that we absolutely love here at Chaos Cards.
  • Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth: Based on the award-winning 7 Wonders Duel mechanics, this 2-player game is a tug-of-war for the fate of Middle Earth. With beautiful artwork and a precise rulebook, you’ll feel the plight of Rohan and the might of Mordor in every card you pull.

Regency Wit with Jane Austen

Best for: Fans of Jane Austen and Bridgerton

Step into the elegant (and sometimes scandalous) world of Jane Austen and her Regency contemporaries. Whether you want to attend a ball or enjoy a quiet afternoon in Hampshire with afternoon tea, we have you covered:

  • The Jane Austen Game: An immersive experience where you dance from ball to ball collecting admirers. Will you marry for fortune or stay independent like Jane herself?

  • The World of Jane Austen Puzzle: If you prefer a scenic tour of Pemberley and Bath, this 1,000-piece puzzle is a masterpiece. It even includes a poster filled with Austen facts and hidden characters like Mr. Darcy for you to spot! Not only is it a fun puzzle to create, it looks amazing too!

The "Massive Massif" of Discworld

Best for: Fans of intense puzzle building and humorous fantasy tales.

Calling all Terry Pratchett fans! We think it is a monumental task to gather 140 iconic characters in one place, but Paul Kidby’s Discworld Massive Massif Puzzle does exactly that. From Death and Rincewind to Granny Weatherwax, this 1,000-piece puzzle is a must-have collectible gift for anyone who has spent time on the back of the Great A'Tuin. Can you spot all the hidden characters in the Discworld universe?

The Sherlock Holmes Files

Best for: Fans of detectives and problem solving.

If your favourite books involve a magnifying glass and a fog-filled alleyway, these Sherlock Holmes related games could be for you:

  • Jack the Ripper & West End Adventures: Part of the Consulting Detective series of games and a standalone masterpiece with ten new cases. Can you navigate the Whitechapel map and outsmart the world's most notorious criminal?

  • EXIT: The Disappearance of Sherlock Holmes: The Chaos Cards team love an EXIT game. In this escape-room-in-a-box, Dr. Watson needs your help to prove Holmes’ innocence. It’s a 3/5 difficulty level, so is perfect for testing your powers of deduction.

Join the Celebration

That’s a wrap on our top picks for World Book Day, here’s a round up:

  • The Epic Choice: Lord of the Rings Duel – high-stakes 2-player fantastical strategy.
  • The Classic Choice: The Jane Austen Game – wit, romance, and dancing.
  • The Mystery Choice: Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective – for the armchair detectives.
