Tales of Lego Transformers and Gameboys
Written by K. Lambert - Nov 01 2025

If your childhood was filled with the epic tales of Transformers and the 8-bit fun of the Game Boy, prepare for two new Lego sets that perfectly capture the magic of both the '80s and '90s. These sets aren’t just toys, they are sophisticated Lego sets, designed for adults who appreciate clever and intricate engineering (and something that looks great on display!)
In this post, we’ll look at what makes the new Lego Icons Transformers: Soundwave and the LEGO Nintendo Game Boy instant classics and how they offer such a great and rewarding building experience.
The Decepticon that needs no Introduction...

Prepare to be astounded by the transforming qualities of this Decepticon; Lego Icons Transformers: Soundwave (10358). You may remember how much we loved the Lego Icons Bumblebee, but Soundwave takes the Lego Icons collection up a gear. This 1,505-piece LEGO set allows you to recreate the fan-favourite, loyal lieutenant of Megatron, and we think the build as well as the final figure are hugely satisfying.
Once built, the massive appeal of this collectible is that it seamlessly transforms from the Decepticon robot into a cassette player without having to take anything apart—an awesome piece of Lego engineering and a huge draw for the Transformers range. The popular Decepticon even comes with a rocket pod, laser blaster and dart accessories.
Soundwave is fully articulated and perfectly posable which makes for a truly dynamic display. The Decepticon comes with a built-in sound brick with voice and sound effects, making Soundwave a truly unique Lego build. We love that Ravage and Laserbeak are included and can be converted into cassette tapes that actually fit inside Soundwave's chest. (Much like the cassettes in the Gameboy, but more on that later.) The complex transformation of Soundwave really makes this Lego set feel special and stand out amongst other Lego Icons sets.
Back to the 8-Bit Era

This Lego Super Mario Game Boy (72046) model will instantly transport you straight back to the 8-bit era. Built at a near 1:1 scale replica of the original system, the design team at LEGO has perfectly captured the essence of the classic handheld. We love the addition of fun and authentic details, such as the working +Control Pad, the A/B Buttons, and the classic contrast/volume dials.
The included interchangeable lenticular screens and the inclusion of the brick-built Game Paks for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Super Mario Land really help make this LEGO set feel special. The fact that you can customise the display with these games or the original Nintendo Start Screen is great for adding your own personal touch. Coming in at 421 pieces, this model offers an immersive, but quick build that provides a satisfying activity without the lengthy commitment of a bigger set. We think this makes the Lego Game Boy the perfect collectible for both gaming fans and Lego newcomers alike.
Final Verdict: Which Icon Will You Build?

Ready to start building? Much like the latest Wicked Lego sets, Soundwave and the Game Boy come with digital 3D building instructions via the Lego Builder app, allowing you to zoom, rotate, and track your progress through every step.
Both of these nostalgic Lego sets really capture the essence of growing up in the retro era. They offer a hands-on, creative activity that’s perfect for those who need a project to help unwind in the evening. The Lego Game Boy is a nice, simple set for quick, immediate building, making it perfect for a newcomer to Lego or someone needing a quick build. Whereas the Lego Icons Soundwave is perfect for the more experienced Lego builder looking for a complex, more challenging project. We think that both sets could make a great gift for the upcoming Christmas season!
