Welcome to the Hellfire Club! Stranger Things and Dungeons and Dragons

In the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana, adventure lies beyond the trees of Mirkwood… That’s where The Hellfire Club comes in; a place where adventure is created with character sheets and polyhedral dice. For millions of fans, the Netflix smash hit Stranger Things has done more than just deliver supernatural thrills since 2016; it has brought the world's most famous tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), back into the pop culture spotlight.

From the very first season, when (a very young!) Mike, Lucas, Will, and Dustin formed 'The Party' to face off against the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer, D&D has proved central to the events happening in Hawkins. In the Stranger Things universe, D&D is more than a game, it mirrors and names the terrifying evils and challenges faced within the Upside Down.

Now, you can join the most infamous club in Hawkins High. The new release, Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons: Welcome to the Hellfire Club, invites fans to take part in the legendary, but unfinished campaigns of beloved Dungeon Master, Eddie Munson. And we can’t wait!

Ready to pick up your D20 and defy the odds? Let's discover what makes this new set a must-have for both D&D newcomers and die-hard Stranger Things enthusiasts; get ready to roll some initiative...

D&D's Legacy

Often credited as the very first roleplaying game (RPG), Dungeons & Dragons was first published in 1974, born from the minds of wargaming enthusiasts Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Although the game as a whole has gone through many changes since it began, the core concept remains unchanged: a Dungeon Master (DM) guides players through a shared, imaginative world, with outcomes determined by the players' choices, the characters' abilities, and the unpredictable nature of rolling dice.

The Real-Life Hellfire: Hail Lord Vecna

No discussion of the Hellfire Club would be complete without acknowledging the controversial history that Stranger Things Season 4 expertly wove into Eddie Munson's story. The Satanic Panic of the 1980s was a period of widespread fear and moral outrage surrounding D&D.

Fundamentalist groups and activists genuinely feared the game was a corrupting force, proclaiming it promoted "demonology, witchcraft, murder, satanic rituals," and that it would make young players unable to differentiate between fantasy and reality. In 1983, an organization called Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons (BADD) was formed and its work very nearly led to the game being banned, and we see the direct and terrifying effect this paranoia has on the character of Eddie.

The irony? One of the main aims of D&D is to triumph over evil. Ultimately, the campaigning had the opposite effect, with more and more teens actively seeking out the game to see what the fuss was about, and increasing its popularity! The Hellfire Club in Stranger Things perfectly represents the D&D groups of the 80’s, depicting a haven for outsiders, free spirits, and creatives.

Welcome to the Hellfire Club: What's in the Box?

The Welcome to the Hellfire Club starter set is the perfect entry point for newcomers to Dungeons & Dragons and an essential collectible for Stranger Things fans. It faithfully captures the strong 80’s aesthetic of the Netflix series, from the character sheets to the Dungeon Master’s Screen, using the same style and font as the 1980s D&D layouts.

This collaborative 3–6 player board game centres on Eddie Munson’s lost adventures, keeping the flames of the Hellfire Club burning!
