How did our first Yu-Gi-Oh! Heart of the Underdog tournament go?

How did our first Yu-Gi-Oh! Heart of the Underdog tournament go?

Down at the Chaos Cards Tabletop Gaming Centre in Folkestone, we ran our first Yu-Gi-Oh! Heart of the Underdog tournament, using the Forbidden list we created with our local players, alongside the current Advanced Forbidden and Restricted list. With 18 players attending and a variety of different and interesting decks, we wanted to do a little rundown of some of the techs and decks that were used!

This format was introduced to bring out some of the fun and rogue archetypes that we don't usually see at the table, and this truly shows in the decks our locals created! One of the new archetypes we saw was Labrynth, a Trap-focused deck where the in-archetype monsters trigger their effects off of Trap cards within the build. An intriguing card that was used, that was released pretty recently in Darkwing Blast, was Destructive Daruma Karma Cannon. This card will flip each monster on the field face-down, then destroy each monster that remains face-up, getting rid of those hard to get at monsters!

Another archetype that was used in this tournament were the much loved Deskbots! These seek to swarm the field, boost the ATK and DEF of one another, and bring out their Extra Deck monsters. Working similarly are the Blackwings, which also saw play at our Heart of the Underdog event. Blackwings received some support recently, and we saw much of that in this deck, including Wollow, Founder of the Drudge Dragons. Wollow will boost your monsters ATK and DEF by 100 for each card in your opponent's GY, but also allows you to use it's material to special summon one of them to your side of the Field! This allowed them to swarm and get their even bigger Blackwing monsters out!

Ghostrick also found themselves in our tournament, which was lovely to see! They focus on flip summoning their in-archetype monsters and flipping your opponent's monsters face-down, this is to allow them to use their Field Spell and attack directly. Ghostrick Dullahan was a big one for this deck, gaining ATK for each Ghostrick card you control and allowing you to detach material to halve ATK. We saw Unchained as well, gaining their effects when their monsters are destroyed by battle or card effect. The core of this deck revolved around generating card advantage, special summoning their monsters, and recovering the used resources from the GY. Absolute King Back Jack was used in this build to stack the top three cards of the deck too!

We saw a Utopia deck at this event too! The idea with this deck is to get out Number 99: Utopia Dragonar out as soon as possible and using its effect to summon Number 38: Hope Harbinger Titanic Dragon Galaxy, gaining the ability to negate Spells and effects. Not only that, but this build seeks to get out Ultimate Leo Utopia Ray with ZW - Pegasus Twin Saber attached to have even more negation! And finally, the winning deck was Madolche! The big thing with this deck was the amount of non-targeting and non-destruction removal to deal with the opponent's boards. This deck also has a Dinowrestler engine in it, using Systegosaur to search Pankratops, special summon it, and then destroy a monster on your opponent's side of the field.

There we have it! Madolche won our first Heart of the Underdog event at the Chaos Cards Tabletop Gaming Centre! Keep an eye out for our next one and be sure to give our Store Facebook page a Like to stay up to date with all of our weekly events.
