Games to Enthrall: From The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings.
Written by Katie Lambert - Sep 01 2025

If we had a pound for every time a hobbit went on a life-changing journey through Middle-earth, we would have... well, only a couple of pounds. But we can’t believe it's happened twice.
2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for both board gamers and Tolkien fans alike. While we've already covered some great Lord of the Rings-themed releases here, we believe these two upcoming games deserve a spotlight of their own. The Hobbit: There & Back Again from Office Dog Games is a dice-drafting adventure that follows Bilbo's quest, while The Fate of the Fellowship is a cooperative strategy game that puts the fate of Middle-earth in your hands. Both games are eagerly awaited, and in this post, we’ll explore what makes each one a thrilling tabletop experience.
The Hobbit: There & Back Again - A Solo or Group Adventure

Game designer Reiner Knizia is the creative mind behind The Hobbit: There & Back Again, a chapter-based board game that brings Bilbo's journey to life. (If you are interested in what a game designer does in their job, check out our interview with the designer of the amazing game Fathom!) Designed for players aged 10 and up, this game is perfect for family game nights, but it also features a challenging 'hard mode' and a dedicated solo mode for those who want to take on Smaug on their own.
Described as a competitive adventure game, The Hobbit: There & Back Again has players drafting dice to create pathways and reach their chapter goals. To succeed, you’ll need to collect resources and perform specific actions, all while evading trolls, battling goblins, and solving riddles. The ultimate goal is to complete the most rewarding journey to the Lonely Mountain. (Singing ‘The Misty Mountains’ whilst playing is entirely optional, but it definitely helps with building the atmosphere!)
The game is divided into chapters that are based on the most iconic scenes from Tolkien's beloved children's book. You'll re-live the thrilling encounters with the trolls, escape the goblins of the Misty Mountains, face the giant spiders of Mirkwood, and have a final confrontation with Smaug, one of the greatest dragons in all of literature. Each player has their own adventure board to track their progress, making for a truly personal experience. We have to say, we cannot wait to play ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again.’
The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship – Let’s Welcome The Pandemic System to Middle-earth

A natural progression from The Hobbit would be a game about The Lord of the Rings, and luckily, Matt Leacock has that sorted. The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship is one of the most highly anticipated board games of 2025. (We knew this from the boxes flying from the shelves at this years UK Games Expo!) This strategic cooperative game is from the creators of the hugely popular Pandemic series, so you know it's going to be good. The combination of the classic Pandemic mechanics with the rich lore of Middle-earth is a recipe for a hit.
In The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship, the fate of Middle-earth is truly in your hands. The game is a perfect blend of cooperative and narrative gameplay that will fully immerse you in the magical realm. While the game can be strategic and at times complex, the core mechanics will feel familiar to anyone who has played Pandemic, making it accessible to a wide range of players.
The primary objective is to protect Frodo from the menacing Nazgûl and Sauron's ever-watchful eye. Each of the 13 playable characters has unique abilities to help you and your fellow adventurers on the quest. This cooperative game is designed for 1 to 5 players, who must work together as a team of two characters to trek across a perilous Middle-earth. The stunning artwork and incredible components, including a dice tower, make this a truly beautiful and immersive experience.
Our Final Thoughts

Both The Hobbit: There & Back Again and The Lord of the Rings: Fate of the Fellowship are poised to be major releases for tabletop gamers. One offers a competitive, chapter-based adventure for those who love dice-drafting and storytelling, while the other provides a cooperative, strategic challenge for fans of the Pandemic system. We really have been spoiled by lots of Lord of the Rings content this year... Now, all we need is a board game based on The Silmarillion!
