Harrison Sharp on the Warboar 2018 Regional

Harrison is our X Wing X-pert here at Chaos Cards. When he’s not writing up articles for us lot at CCHQ he’s at our tabletop gaming centre running our tournaments. We’ve told him to go home and get a life that isn’t based around tiny plastic spaceships, but he just doesn’t listen.

Welcome back, fellow pilots. Today we have my write-up of the Warboar 2018 Regional; so without any further ado, lets jump into what I’m flying

Fire-Control System 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 34
Nu Squadron Pilot — Alpha-class Star Wing 18

That’s right, I net-listed. 3bQD has everything I want in a list and with regional’s fast approaching and me in a complete list funk I decided to use someone else’s idea so I could fly something I knew would be good and I could get some reps in with it before I went to the tournament. There isn’t much to say about this list that hasn’t already been said, so I’m going to just jump inot my games.

Round 1 Vs. Kieron (Victory)

Darth Vader — TIE Advanced 29
Veteran Instincts 1
Advanced Targeting Computer 1
Engine Upgrade 4
TIE/x1 0
Ship Total: 35
Colonel Vessery — TIE Defender 35
Expertise 4
Tractor Beam 1
TIE/D 0
Ship Total: 40
Nu Squadron Pilot — Alpha-class Star Wing 18
Harpoon Missiles 4
Long-Range Scanners 0
Os-1 Arsenal Loadout 2
Ship Total: 24

Kieron was running a list very similar to my store championship list, with Vessery sporting a tractor beam for maximum damage. That ship had to die, and quickly, then I could chase off Vader and hopefully have enough in the tank to drop the Nu. That should cripple the firepower of the list and, as long as I had 2 ships on the board, I would be able to pull it out of the bag. We set up in opposite corners and committed to a joust in the middle of the board, while Kieron’s Vader skirted the edge. I managed to catch Vessery in arc of everything and reduce him to 1 hit, thanks to the Tractor beam dropping one of my Nus onto a rock. Next turn, with everything at range 1 of Vessery I decided to take the shot before he could put any more pain into my ships. I manged to deal 8 damage to myself and kill my wounded boat, but Vessery was toast and Vader was coming into the traffic jam. I managed to block him up with the Nus for a couple of key turns and with the weight of all my range 1 fire he went down in flames. All that was left was to hunt down the Nu.

Win 100-22

Round 2 Vs. Ricardo (Victory)

“Quickdraw” — TIE/sf Fighter 29
Veteran Instincts 1
Fire-Control System 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 34
Nu Squadron Pilot — Alpha-class Star Wing 18
Harpoon Missiles 4
Long-Range Scanners 0

Harpoon Missiles 4
Long-Range Scanners 0
Ship Total: 22
Nu Squadron Pilot — Alpha-class Star Wing 18
Harpoon Missiles 4
Long-Range Scanners 0
Ship Total: 22

This was the dreaded mirror match. I won the roll off and gave Ricardo Initiative, which instantly put him on the back foot. I came in with QD and a Nu in the frount, ready to joust, while my 2 other Nus had sprinted half way up the board and turned in to pincer Ricardo’s force. He brought everything in and flew it straight down my throat. With both his and my QD barrel rolling to arc dodge, I managed to dodge all bar 1 harpoon, where as Ricardo was going to eat 2. Thanks to some hot red dice, his QD evaporated and another Nu was left on 1 hit. Ricardo decided to call it there, with my QD sitting with only 1 shield removed and the shields off of another boat. I don’t blame him as there was pretty much nothing he could have done at that point to secure the win.

Win 100-0

Round 3 Vs. Robert (Victory)

Lok Revenant — Scurrg H-6 Bomber 26
Deadeye 1
Extra Munitions 2
Harpoon Missiles 4
Boba Fett 1
Guidance Chips 0
Ship Total: 34
Lok Revenant — Scurrg H-6 Bomber 26
Deadeye 1
Extra Munitions 2
Harpoon Missiles 4
Courier Droid 0
Guidance Chips 0
Ship Total: 33
Lok Revenant — Scurrg H-6 Bomber 26
Deadeye 1
Autoblaster Turret 2
Harpoon Missiles 4
Courier Droid 0
Long-Range Scanners 0
Ship Total: 33

This was not a list I wanted to see. Just as many harpoons as I had, plus higher Pilot Skill. I knew this was going to be bloody, especially when Robert set up to joust. I brought QD in from the side and managed to get a cheeky range 3 1 v 1 engagement and strip a shiled. Not a lot, but it was a start! Richard was more scared of my harpoons than I expected, and decided to rush into range 1 of me. The game was spent with me trying to jockey for position and keep QD out of Autoblaster range, while Robert Talon Rolled up and down the side corridor, but with most of his actions spent on barrel rolling for position, he was unable to modify his dice, added to that he rolled no hits with a lot of crucial range 1 shots. His dice really did want to rub salt in the wound, with 3 focus and a blank being his regular roll when his dice weren’t modified! This game went to time, with me dropping two of his Scurrgs for 1 of my gunboats.

Win 67-22

Round 4 Vs. Oli (Victory)

“Quickdraw” — TIE/sf Fighter 29
Veteran Instincts 1
Fire-Control System 2
Lightweight Frame 2
Special Ops Training 0
Ship Total: 34
Kylo Ren (TIE Silencer) — TIE Silencer 35
Push the Limit 3
Advanced Sensors 3
Advanced Optics 2
Autothrusters 2
First Order Vanguard 2
Ship Total: 47
Omega Squadron Pilot — TIE/fo Fighter 17
A Score to Settle 0
Advanced Optics 2
Ship Total: 19

With 3 wins under my belt, I knew I was in with a chance of making the cut. One more win would ensure I was in with a chance, so it’s only fitting that my round 4 opponent is probably one of the best ace players in the UK. We set up in opposite corners and Oli sends in QD and the FO to joust, while Kylo screams forwards to flank. My Nus take a lane down the middle of the board, while I stall for time with QD. The opening engagement has 2 of my boats switch their lock from Kylo to QD, while the third covers his route into the engagement. Oli later told me that he was shocked at exactly how aggressively I played the boats in the opening joust, meaning I caught QD bang to rights. 2 harpoons and a primary shot from the other boat later and QD is a pile of ash. My QD and his flailed ineffectively at each other from range 3, while Kylo had to bug out and the FO did a whole lot of nothing. Next round saw me block and kill the FO, leaving a healthy Kylo against my entire list. I’m not quite sure what happened here… Kylo got angry. 6 shots and 3 dead gunboats later and it was a 1 health Kylo against my fully healthy QD, but with time ticking quickly down, I needed to kill him or lose on points. I managed to catch him on the last round of the game and deal the last hit I needed!

Win 100-66

Round 5 Vs. Tom (Victory)

Poe Dameron (PS9) — T-70 X-Wing 33
Veteran Instincts 1
BB-8 2
Advanced Optics 2
Autothrusters 2
Black One 1
Ship Total: 41
Fenn Rau (Sheathipede) — Sheathipede-class Shuttle 20
Veteran Instincts 1
Gunner 5
R3-A2 2
Ship Total: 28
Wedge Antilles — X-Wing 29
Veteran Instincts 1
Flight-Assist Astromech 1
Integrated Astromech 0
Ship Total: 31

Well, I had managed to dodge Poe in his Black One all day, so it was bound to happen eventually! This ship is a severe hard counter to my list, so I was pretty happy when I won the roll for initiative and gave it to Tom. I used my gunboat’s long range scanners to keep Fenn locked up, mainly to keep Poe in formation with the rest of Tom’s squad. We ended up jousting and I got a Harpoon off into Wedge, dropping his shields and laying a crit into him. Tom spaces his Astromech to avoid taking a damaged engine, which was quite key as it reduced his repositioning, allowing me to get a few shots onto him where I wouldn’t have been able to before. QD had barrel rolled to come in behind Tom and in the next coupdl of rounds I managed to focus fire down Fenn. Wedge and Poe escaped the trap and started to turn around the rocks. I get lucky and drop a crit into Wedge, setting off the harpooned condition and tagging Poe. To make matters worse for Tom, it was a direct hit! Wedge was off the board and what happened next was a cagey half an hour where Tom was desperately trying to kill my remaining 2 gunboats while avoiding QD. Time is called and I have 1 boat remaining and Poe is on 1 hull, with QD completely healthy.

Win 59-44

Round 6 Vs. Craig (Victory)

Rey — YT-1300 45
Expertise 4
Kanan Jarrus 3
Finn 5
Scavenger Crane 2
Smuggling Compartment 0
Countermeasures 3
Millennium Falcon (TFA) 1
Ship Total: 63
Lowhhrick — Auzituck Gunship 28
Draw Their Fire 1
Ezra Bridger 3
Maul 3
Ship Total: 35

I’m in the cut! This round was a lot of fun, as at this point there was little riding on it except for placement in the cut and pride. Craig had a ridiculously aggressive build on his Lowrhhick, added to the Draw Their Fire EPT and he was target number 1. Every one of my locks went on him and I swept my entire squad into the fray. This game was all about the damage output, and with Lowrhhick going down in the second round of combat for only 1 and a half gunboats, I felt very confident. Craig managed to drop the wounded boat and start to loop around the middle rock, I got my other boat out of the fray to reload and sent QD to chase down Rey. I managed to avoid arc until the final shot of the game, where a harpooned and wounded Rey finally went down to QDs revenge shot.

Win 100-44

So, I’m in the cut, coming second in Swiss and 1 of only 2 people out of the 142 players over the weekend. I’m over the moon with my performance, now all I have to do is play as well in the cut. Long story short, I didn’t! You can see the match here:

This was always going to be a difficult match, being outbid for initiative meant that Andy’s gunboat could arc dodge mine and his Aces had perfect knowledge. I still think I played a blinder, with only a couple of mistakes costing me the game. Firstly, my target priority fell apart after I managed the switch into QD. I should have gone after the gunboat a little more aggressively sooner. Secondly, I SLAMed with a gunboat to avoid a shot from Vader, putting me into position to get Harpooned instead! If I had just taken the lock of Focus, I would have been able to turn in the next round and Harppon him right back! Finally, There was a clutch round where I was just out of range of Vader. I had Slooped to keep arc and stay in range 1 of my harpooned gunboat. I wanted to give Andy the tought choice of shooting my boat and triggering QDs revenge shot, but instead I just lost a shield for nothing!

So that’s the end of my run at Bromley! I was super happy to go undefeated in Swiss, but bummed about being knocked out in the top 32. Swings and roundabouts I guess! All in all I had a blinding time, playing against some great people; but for now it’s time to get ready for the Wayland Games Regional next weekend! So until next time, fly casual.
