Magic The Gathering x Warhammer 40k: Forces Of The Imperium

Wizards of the Coast’s latest Universes Beyond release comes in the form of four commander decks showcasing the incredible world of Warhammer 40k. With a combined 160 brand new cards, these decks are a huge leap for preconstructed decks and have really ramped up the power and the flavour! Up second is Forces Of The Imperium, the ultimate authority for humans across the Galaxy. Under the political and religious rule of your own living god, the Emperor of Mankind, you look to make use of your vast armies to enforce order.

Greyfax is an Imperium inquisitor, tasked with seeking out traitors, witches and mutants. With nearly unlimited power, she is able to call upon all of the military forces needed to get the job done. Commanding this deck, Greyfax is focused on investigating clues and brings plenty of Imperium power with her by buffing up your other creatures. The brand new Squad mechanic demonstrates the sheer power of this army by allowing you to pay extra mana when casting creatures to create token copies of them and overwhelm the battlefield.

The Imperium deck's game plan is to go wide with plenty of token creatures, make them stronger and benefit from a bit of life gain whilst we’re at it. Greyfax has a solid combination of abilities interweaved together, attacking with vigilance and then tapping for a clue for maximum effect. The extra power and vigilance she provides to all of your other creatures can draw a lot of unwanted attention from opponents, so having a few extra cards like For the Emperor! are extremely useful in pushing forward with our militant agenda when Greyfax is stuck in the command zone.

As far as stand out cards go, this deck is really packing the smash hits! The first card to catch my attention was the 7 mana board wipe Exterminatus, removing indestructible from your opponents permanents before destroying it all is incredibly powerful in the commander landscape. Vexilus Praetor is also an immediate powerhouse in commander decks, giving your commanders protection from everything is forcing your opponents to find not one but two removal spells in order to deal with your commander. The Golden Throne is really interesting in a pinch and can be the kind of make or break card that gets you right back into a losing game.

On the surface, the Forces Of The Imperium deck is definitely the trickiest to get to grips with what it’s trying to do, its game plan being less clear cut as the others. However, it only takes a game or two to realize the true potential of its power and can be carefully piloted to devastating effect. The pile of powerful cards are worth picking up the deck by themselves, let alone how good the deck is straight out the box.
