Based on the best-selling novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones: The Board Game Second Edition lets 3-6 players take control of the great houses of Westeros in an epic struggle to claim the Iron Throne.

The updated second edition brings a host of enhancements to your A Game of Thrones experience. It incorporates elements from previous expansions, including ports, garrisons, Wildling cards, and Siege engines, while introducing welcome new innovations. Convenient player screens will hide your underhanded dealings from prying eyes, while new Tides of Battle cards convey the uncertainty of war. This, along with updated graphics and a clarified ruleset, means the time has never been better to claim the Iron Throne.

A Game of Thrones: The Board Game Second Edition includes:

  • 1 Rulebook and 1 Game Board
  • 138 Plastic Units
  • 105 Cards
  • 6 Player Screens
  • 266 Tokens and Overlays

Value for Money

This is the game that sparked my interest in Fantasy Flight Games. An incredibly strategy centric game that requires planning, manipulation, backstabbing, and more. The board is a map of Westeros and is very high quality, the ship and infantry markers are nice, the artwork on the cards is outstanding. If you like Risk, but don't like the reliance on luck, this is for you. All about strategy. I've played this many times and not bored yet. Just try not to play Greyjoys on your first game, the hardest team to win with!!

This game is great! I recommend checking out an instructional video before playing the first time, but once you get the hang of how orders work it really is quite straightforward.

The components are in usual FFG quality, which is excellent, and the theme is very well executed. Every move you make can change how people see you, either as a threat or an ally - very evocative of the politics of the books.

Combat is simple, you just add up your numbers and play a card. This makes it relatively easy to predict an outcome, but this allows you a lot of forward planning, which makes the strategy element very important. It also means that you need plan A, B, and C, just in case House Baratheon ends up destroying the army you were intending on shipping north to deal with Greyjoy...

That being said, it is important to have the right people for a game like this, as backstabbing and lying will definitely play a role here...so this is not necessarily the best game for a light-hearted group. But with the right people this is a ton of fun!
